There’s a Girl in My Soup (1970)

An older, simpler comedy. Sellers is great with expressions and has a fantastic voice. Hawn is pretty good. We get to see her young bum.

A Clockwork Orange (1971)

Definitely interesting. It’s the sterility of Kubrick’s films which make them so scary. He sure does love sex, and he sure does love classical music.

The Devils (1971)

Holy shit. This is one pretty fucked up movie. I mean, this movie is fucking nasty. So crazy and grotesque that it’s scary, nauseating, and funny at the same time. Bad date movie. I can see how, with quite a bit of toning down, it might have led to The…

Earthquake (1971)

Cheese Louise. It’s funnier than it is scary. The characters are such losers in this movie, except for the cop, who was pretty cool. Decent effects (except for that red splattering), and a helluva bike stunt. That police car chase looked oddly like “Police Squad”. One girl had no tits,…

Fiddler on the Roof (1971)

A film about the degradation of Jewish tradition by more modern ideals. A very Jewish film. The long take with the fiddler with the title graphics was pretty cool, and so were those freeze frame and distanced conversations with himself. The whole “why is God playing bad jokes on me”…

Deliverance (1972)

Spooky. A horror movie in a way, and one of the better horror movies of it’s time. A truly humbling experience. The “Duelling Banjos” scene was great. I like banjos! That inbred kid was really damn freaky. And the tension in the rape scene was really great, too. Voight was…

Fritz the Cat (1972)

It gets its rating for being different, like The Devils. It’s refreshing to see movies like this once in a while. Made by an NYU student (wouldn’t this have made a great thesis film?) who went on to direct feature films. Amazing. Amazingly political, with blatant and brave depictions of…

The Godfather (1972)

Great cast, but the acting’s not so good. Brando’s got a great look (except for the lump in his forehead), but you can’t understand a thing he says. Reminded me a bit of Casino. Nice flavor. Lots of browns, blacks, grays, pinks. Nice Potemkin shot-in-the-eyeglasses homage/hack.

The Way of the Dragon (1972)

Nice intro sequence. A bit slow overall. A bit too much time is spent trying to develop the crummy story. Nice 60’s flavor and music. Funny sounds he makes when he fights. The fighting sounds were a bit gay because the sounds were so unnatural. When a fighting scece uses…

The Exorcist (1973)

Interesting beginning, but I don’t quite get the connection with Iraq. Pretty good story, but it takes a while for it to get going. Good music and good, freaky possession sequences, but the film needed more of both. I can see how Poltergeist was modelled after this movie.
